Uganda vs. Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking: An Honest, In-Depth Comparison

Uganda vs. Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking: An Honest, In-Depth Comparison
Trekking to see mountain gorillas in the wild is one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on Earth. There are only around 1,000 mountain gorillas left, and they live in just a few forested mountains in East Africa. For most travellers, the big question is simple: should I go to Uganda or Rwanda? Both countries offer a safe, well-organized, and unforgettable gorilla trekking experience. But they are different in cost, travel time, terrain, and the type of trip you will have. This honest comparison will help you decide which destination is right for you.
The Cost: A Big Difference
The most obvious difference is the price of the gorilla trekking permit.
Uganda: A permit costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents. Uganda also has more affordable lodges and a wider range of budget, mid-range, and luxury options.
Rwanda: A permit costs $1,500 per person. Rwanda is positioned as a premium destination, with higher-end lodges and a more polished, luxurious feel.
For a couple, that is a difference of $1,400 in permit costs alone. In Uganda, two gorilla treks cost less than one trek in Rwanda. If budget matters to you, Uganda is the clear winner.
The Trekking Experience: Terrain and Difficulty
The experience of meeting a gorilla family is similar in both countries. You will hike into the forest with a guide, find a habituated gorilla family, and spend one hour with them. Only eight visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day. The animals are the same. The forest is what differs.
Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park): Bwindi is a dense, ancient rainforest. It is humid, often steep, and sometimes muddy. Treks can range from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved. The southern sectors like Rushaga and Nkuringo are more demanding, while the northern Buhoma sector is generally easier. This is a true jungle adventure.
Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park): The terrain here is more open, with bamboo forest and volcanic slopes. Treks are generally considered shorter and less strenuous, often taking 1 to 3 hours. The paths are well-maintained, and the views of the volcanoes are spectacular. If you are less fit or short on time, Rwanda may be easier.
Both parks offer porters to help carry your bag and assist you on steep sections. Hiring a porter is strongly recommended.
The Unique Uganda Advantage: Gorilla Habituation
Uganda offers something Rwanda does not: the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This allows you to spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still being accustomed to human presence, compared to the standard one hour. This is a deeper, more immersive, and more adventurous experience. It is only available in Uganda and is perfect for serious photographers and wildlife lovers.
Accessibility and Travel Time
Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park is only a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Kigali International Airport. You can land in the evening and be trekking gorillas the next morning. This makes Rwanda ideal if you have limited time.
Uganda: Bwindi is more remote. The drive from Entebbe International Airport takes 8 to 10 hours, usually broken into two days. You can also take a short domestic flight to an airstrip near Bwindi. The longer journey means your trip becomes part of the adventure, often including game drives and other wildlife along the way.

Gorilla Families and Permit Availability
Uganda has over 20 habituated gorilla families across Bwindi’s four sectors and Mgahinga, with more than 150 permits issued daily. This means better availability and more flexibility on trek dates.
Rwanda has around 12 habituated families and roughly 100 to 112 daily permits. Permits can be harder to get during peak season, so you need to book well in advance.
Accommodation: Luxury vs. Variety
Rwanda has some of the finest gorilla trekking lodges in Africa, such as Bisate Lodge and Singita Kwitonda. These are world-class, high-end properties. Budget options exist but are more limited.
Uganda offers a wider range of accommodation, from simple guesthouses to excellent mid-range and luxury lodges like Buhoma Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. You can have a comfortable, high-quality stay without the premium price tag of Rwanda.
What Else Can You Do?
Uganda offers more to combine with your gorilla trek. You can visit Queen Elizabeth National Park for tree-climbing lions and boat safaris, Murchison Falls for dramatic landscapes, Kibale Forest for the best chimpanzee trekking in Africa, and the Rwenzori Mountains. Uganda is a complete safari destination.
Rwanda has a smaller but well-organized circuit, including Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and Akagera National Park for the Big Five. It is ideal if you want a shorter, more focused trip.
The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Uganda if:
- You want a more affordable gorilla trekking experience.
- You want the chance to do the 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience.
- You want more permit availability and flexibility on dates.
- You want a richer, multi-park safari adventure.
- You want a wilder, more adventurous jungle experience.
Choose Rwanda if:
- You have limited time and want the shortest travel to the gorillas.
- You want a premium, luxurious lodge experience.
- You prefer shorter, less strenuous treks.
- You want to combine gorillas with a short, polished trip.
Many travellers choose to do both countries on one trip. But if you want the best value, the most choice, and the most complete African safari adventure, Uganda is the answer.
